Asuka no Yu is a modern version of the traditional Japanese onsen hot spring bathhouse Dogo Onsen Honkan. Located in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, this area is known for offering one of the oldest, most enjoyable hot spring resorts in Japan.
At Dogo Onsen, you'll experience a nostalgic retro atmosphere of 19th century Japan, like that depicted in the classic novel, Botchan (1906), written by Natsume Soseki, the outstanding Japanese novelist of the Meiji period (1868 – 1912) known for his ability to depict the plight of the alienated modern Japanese intellectual.
The pleasant ambiance of Dogo Onsen area is ideal for experiencing traditional Japanese activities. In this short tour, you will learn the skills of bamboo craft making and Noh theater performance before relaxing in one of Dogo Onsen's most acclaimed hot springs.
Bamboo Craft Making
Here, you will learn to make traditional Iyo bamboo items for which Ehime Prefecture is known. Raw materials include high-quality green bamboo from Ehime and tiger bamboo from Kochi Prefecture. The rich characteristics of your basket will continue to develop with use.
Noh Theater Experience
Noh, or Nohgaku, is a Japanese performing art developed over 600 years ago. Noh continues to employ many aspects from its original form, including stage design and script structure. Noh is the oldest form of stage performance in the world. Here, you will enjoy a Noh stage experience that includes an informative lecture presented on the full-scale outdoor Noh stage at Dogo Onsen.
