Yogyakarta is well known as the heart of classical Javanese fine arts and culture, such as batik (traditional fabric), ballet, drama, gamelan orchestras and traditional shadow puppet shows. This tour will take you deep into Java to explore its diversity, starting with a visit to the Ullen Sentalu museum to discover the history of batik traditions related to two ancient Javanese sultanates; Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Batik is registered as a UNESCO intangible world heritage, easily recognizable from its intricate patterns, each instilled with their own cultural significance. A tradition of making batik has existed since the 12th century, and the designs are essentially used for ceremonial costume. Batik developed wholesale as an industry at the beginning of 19th century, and now it has become a proud banner of national identity for Indonesians. So much in fact, that October 2nd is celebrated nationwide as National Batik Day.
In addition, you will attend a jewelry-making workshop on this tour. The location is in Kotagede, the evocative old town district of Yogyakarta, well known internationally for its fine silver craftsmanship. The traditional silver industry in this area grew steadily alongside the establishment and expansion of the town itself; at the beginning it was only to fulfill the needs of households and ceremonial equipment for the royal family, but then grew into a financially lucrative industry during Dutch colonization.
Join the local artist community in the village of Nitiprayan, home to many successful and noted artists. Various events, such as art festivals and cultural performances, are often held in this village. Visit some art galleries to admire the finest Indonesian contemporary artworks. Shortly after there will be a chance to potter around the village, which is still home to traditional values and preserved houses, despite being located relatively close to the downtown area of the city.
Enjoy the night with dinner followed by a performance of the legendary Ramayana ballet at Purawisata. Depicting the story of the epic Ramayana saga, this ballet combines traditional Javanese dance, drama and music (gamelan). A captivating blend of arts that gives you an authentic experience and unforgettable memories of Java.
