Experience one of the most incredible zoos in the world: the Schönbrunn Tiergarten, first opened in 1752. The Vienna Zoo dates from imperial times and links the medieval with the modern, something especially noticeable in the beautiful Baroque octagonal breakfast pavilion, just a single part of the extraordinarily diverse architectural heritage of Vienna.
The zoo features numerous recreations of habitats from all over the world and is home to more than 4,000 animals, including elephants, koalas, giraffes, and giant pandas. Apart from the Berlin Zoo, Schönbrunn is the only place in mainland Europe to see pandas. The two representatives of this endangered species in Vienna, Yang Yang and Long Hui, arrived at the zoo in 2003.
The zoo, situated on the grounds of Schönbrunn palace, also has a rainforest house and an aquarium. Children of all ages will enjoy the petting zoo, where they can get close to the cuddliest of the animals, and very little ones can run around in the play park.
