New Zealand’s most comprehensive themed wildlife park, the Willowbank experience tells the story of our country’s natural heritage. Using pioneering and innovative display techniques, with an emphasis on creating a natural environment, as well as an up-close and personal interactive experience, Willowbank showcases one of New Zealand’s best displays of native species. Willowbank was the first to open a glass-free nocturnal house for kiwi in a natural environment, guaranteeing viewings every time.
With three different sections of animals, you will not be able to find such a large variety of NZ wildlife anywhere else. Stay till the late afternoon for an informative guided tour around the native area of Willowbank. Get even closer with some native wildlife such as the kea and kiwi.
Welcome to Ko Tāne, a journey through time of an ancient people. Ko Tāne is an interactive Māori cultural experience that provides a look into our country's history from the past to the present day in a fun and informative experience.
Your experience at Ko Tāne will include your official welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand - this is a traditional Māori powhiri (welcome) that takes in the wero (warrior challenge) and hongi (pressing of noses between chief and visitor). Your experience then takes you into our fully interactive village where you will be shown the tools and skills of the Māori hunter, his cooking techniques, the games he played to pass away his day, and traditional instruments used to communicate with his gods.
You will be entertained with a 45-minute kapahaka performance, which includes action songs, poi dances (long and short poi), haka, stick games and weapons displays. The performance also gives you an opportunity to learn poi and the haka, and take the perfect memory photo.
End your day in Willowbank with a hāngī dinner. The chefs have captured the traditional tastes of a hāngī and mixed that with the excitement of contemporary flavours. Your dinner includes a buffet of pork, chicken, lamb, kumara, potatoes, salads and stuffing. There will be a licensed bar and an opportunity to feed the deer between courses.
