In this tour, our guide from Tokyo Flour Mania will guide you through bakeries and Japanese traditional spots in the Yanaka/Ueno area, “Shitamachi” (literally “low city”) district of Tokyo where lots of historical Japanese culture is still left. We will visit a bakery (Atom) in the shopping street named "Yanaka Ginza" first. Then, we will move to Ueno area to visit two more bakeries.
Below is the list of bakeries we will visit:
The shop name comes from “Mighty Atom” or “Astro Boy” which is a famous manga character that the owner really likes. Astro Boy figures and framed drawings line the shop and customers can buy Astro Boy-themed goods, along with the bread. We will be tasting bread baked in a special oven made from lava from Mt. Fuji.
They started in 2015 as Kayaba Coffee’s sister shop. One of the unique features of this bakery is its architecture, as it was converted from a kominka, a traditional Japanese house. We will be enjoying bread made from domestic (Japanese) flour and raisin yeast.
This is a sister’s shop of “BOULANGERIE ianak!” which is located in Nishi-Nippori and specializes in bakery that sells sandwiches made of koppe pan, bread similar to hot dog buns. Koppe pan was once served as part of school lunches in the Showa era, but recently specialized koppe pan bakeries have cropped up as a resurgence and a reinterpretation of this nostalgic bread. They started in 2014.
