Mt. Takao has been considered a sacred mountain since ancient times. According to Japanese folklore, the mountain is home to Tengu, long-nosed demons who are also considered a type of Shinto god. Therefore, you’ll find many Tengu statues at the local temple. Tengu are believed to live on the sacred mountain to act as messengers of the deities and Buddha to chastise evildoers and protect the good.
A train ride from Shinjuku Station to Mt. Takao takes around one hour. While there are several routes to climb Mt. Takao, we recommend taking the cable car from Takao Station up to the mid-point of the mountain, continue walking up to Yakuouin temple and the peak, then taking the cable car back down to the station. This route will take around five hours in total.
On this tour, you’ll be brought to several power spots to pray for good luck in various aspects of your life, including money luck, passing examinations, protection from evil, fulfilment of wishes, marriage, a happy family life, longevity, good health, and etc.
On days when the skies are clear, you’ll also get to enjoy a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji.
