In Japan, Kahokucho, Yamagata Prefecture is now known as Benihana Town. Here, safflower has been cultivated since the Edo period (1603 – 1868). Producers processed safflower leaves into lumps and transported it to Kyoto. There, the lumps were made into the rouge for cheek and lip makeup for noble ladies. Artisans also used the safflower dye to color costumes bright or faint crimson.
