The Glorious Skógar
Skógar is a magical green oasis under the magnificent Eyjafjöll mountains. It is adorned with one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, Skógafoss, whose powerful presence is matched by its rainbow crown. The drive to Skógar is a scenic ride through the picturesque south of Iceland, passing by pretty farms, villages and waterfalls with excellent views of the surrounding mountains, volcanoes and the Westman Islands on clear days.
The Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Trail
Skógar is one of the great stops on the south shore and marks the start (or finish) of the ever popular Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail, frequented by locals and hiking travellers alike. This 1 or 2-day hike between Skógar and Þórsmörk passes between the world-famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier and its larger sibling Mýrdalsjökull and the views are both diverse and spectacular. The route is just over 20 km and the hike takes approx. 9 hours but if you’d like to take your time, sleeping accommodation in a hut can be pre-booked. If you plan on doing the Fimmvörðuháls hike, check out our Hiking Pass for more flexible transfer options. If hiking isn’t your thing, enjoy the wonderful Folk Museum at Skógar, marvel at the legendary Skógafoss waterfall or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the area.
The Highland Bus
Icelandic highland roads are often dirt tracks or gravel roads and can be quite tricky to navigate. Reykjavik Excursions operates specialized highland buses with professional drivers that navigate these roads with ease and comfort. The Highland Bus runs daily between Reykjavik and Skógar during the summer, to serve the nature-loving hikers and travellers that frequent these parts. If you don’t plan on spending the night, you can catch a morning bus to Skógar and be back in the city by evening.
