Discover the perfectly preserved city of Pingyao with this private walking tour including the highlights of the city explained by a friendly and professional guide, and a traditional paper-cutting class to complete a wonderful China-culture experience.
Meet your guide at the North Gate of Pingyao Ancient City’s Wall (北口 in Chinese). Your guide will be waiting for you at the ticket office to start this private walking tour of the city. The ancient Town of Pingyao is a well-preserved historic town built during the Western Zhou Dynasty (B.C.1100-771B.C.) that has remained with almost the same appearance as it had during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
During this tour of Pingyao, your guide will show you some of the most interesting highlights of the city, including the City Wall, the Ming-Qing street, the Rishengchang Exchange Shop and the Ancient Government Office. Your guide’s schedule is pretty flexible so you can visit the different attractions in the order you want.
First you will visit the Ancient City Wall, one of the most impressive in China, to see the roofs and locate the buildings from the distance with the help of your guide. Then you will walk towards the Ming-Qing street, which has been the busiest commercial block of the city for hundreds of years. This street gathers around 80 antique stores, including exchange shops, pawnshops, security guard companies, and other handicraft workshops.
Then you will enjoy a traditional Chinese cuisine lunch in a local restaurant before heading to the Chinese paper-cutting class, a unique and old art in China. A professional handicraftsman will teach you how to use scissors to cut pictures patterns in paper, which are later pasted on the walls, windows, or lanterns to express the feelings of joy and the perceptions in life.
After this activity, you will continue your tour in Pingyao visiting the 200-year-old Rishengchang Exchange Shop, that was the first 'bank' in China's history. Finally, you will explore the Ancient Government Office, that was the solemn law court and prison, where you will see some prisoners' uniforms and rusty ancient torture equipment.
Around 4:00 pm, the tour will finish, and you can continue exploring the city on your own.
